Pohoiki in Lower Puna was home to the fisherman's boat ramp and was beloved by all fishermen, surfers, bodyboarders, and sports enthusiasts. It had a reputation for being one of the best and most challenging surf breaks on the island. Especially unforgiving Third Bay, notably known as "best left alone." Other surf spots close by were Dead Trees, Shacks, and Secrets which were all taken by volcanic flows in 2018. Its untouched natural beauty drew locals and tourists alike, some of whom had to be rescued from the treacherous waves that only more experienced swimmers and surfers could handle.
