Nene Crossing Beach Road
Government Beach Road in Lower Puna is a favorite place for folks to walk and get some exercise while taking in some spectacular sights. The Nene is the official state bird of Hawaii and you can often see them walking the trail themselves or flying spectacularly over your head. On the Cliffs off Beach Road you can always find one or two fishermen casting their lines, see common or spinner dolphins that capture your attention, and maybe that day an Opihi picker will brave the waves that crash onto slippery boulders while they crawl and race like crabs to cut the prized and delectable shellfish off the rocks. Monthly full moon celebrations are the most fun with hibachi fires and Hawaiian music keeping the perfect beat as people gather and embrace the golden orb as it rises out from the Pacific. If you're lucky, you may catch a glimpse of whales that migrate here once a year. The background shows golden mushrooms which are abundant in this humid climate and handpainted signs. On the opposite side is a photo of a heart of marigold flowers. At one point I had so many tall blooms that I trimmed them all down and brought them to the cliffs in a big basket and created this heart for all who pass by. Blessings for the day.
